PMHS Assistance Programs

Residents in our service area may be eligible for services including spay/neuter assistance, pet food assistance and end-of-life assistance (euthanasia).  

Pope Memorial Humane Society serves the following communities:

Rockland, Thomaston, Warren, Owls Head, St. George, Port Clyde, Martinsville and Tenants Harbor, South Thomaston, Spruce Head, Union, Cushing, Matinicus, North Haven, Vinalhaven, Morrill, Washington, Knox, Friendship, and Dixmont.

Spay Neuter Assistance Voucher Program

At Pope Memorial Humane Society, we advocate spaying and neutering pets. In addition to reducing homeless pet overpopulation, spaying or neutering improves the health and wellness of pets, diminishes undesirable behaviors associated with females in heat and overactive male suitors, and ensures enough homes for all pets.

That’s why we offer a spay/neuter assistance voucher to residents in our service area who are low-income or experiencing financial hardship to help get their pet(s) “fixed.”

Pet owners using the voucher will receive up to $100 in financial assistance toward their pet’s spay/neuter surgery at participating local veterinary hospitals or clinics.

How do I get a voucher?

Pet owners interested in obtaining a spay/neuter voucher should secure an appointment with a local veterinary hospital or clinic. Once an appointment is confirmed, pet owners should come into the shelter to fill out the form and affirm their eligibility by signing the voucher.

*Vouchers can be used for dogs, cats, and rabbits.

*Vouchers are valid for 30 days. 

*To qualify for a voucher, you must be a resident of one of the communities that PMHS serves.

Moms and Toms Program

Have an “oops” litter? PMHS can help.

Make this litter your pet’s last. Through our Moms and Toms Program, PMHS offers free spay surgery for any female cat or dog whose offspring is surrendered to us to be adopted out through our adoption program. If dad resides in the same home, we’ll neuter him too. Working together, we will help prevent future unplanned litters.

Here’s how it works:

The program is available to pet owners residing in any of the communities that PMHS serves whose resident pet is pregnant or has recently had a litter of kittens or puppies. The pet owner is asked, if possible, to foster the kittens or puppies until they are old enough and healthy enough (approximately 10-12 weeks) to be spayed/neutered and ready for adoption. If fostering in the home is not possible, we will arrange a foster home.

We will vaccinate and spay Mom to prevent future litters. Dad too, if available and owned by the same person.

Owners agree to relinquish ALL kittens/puppies to the shelter. We will vaccinate the kittens/puppies to keep them healthy, treat them for worms and fleas, spay/neuter them when old enough, microchip them and then adopt them into loving homes. 

After they are fixed, Mom (and Dad) will be returned to the owner free of charge.

Any family or friends who want to adopt one of the kittens/puppies must fill out an adoption application and follow the standard adoption process through PMHS.

Pet Food Assistance

If you are struggling to feed your pet, we are here to help.  

We offer temporary assistance to help individuals and families in need feed their pets. 

Community members in need of pet food support may call the shelter at (207) 594-2200 to request food for their pets. 

You will be asked to provide the number and type of pets needing food and the town you reside in.  Then, we will set an appointment for food pickup.  

Since our pet food assistance program is supported by donations from our generous community, we cannot guarantee how much or what kind of food we will have available at any given time. We will consider special requests for certain formulas or flavors of pet food (i.e. senior, grain free, etc.), but are only able to give what we have at the time the request is made.  

In addition to our food assistance program, we also partner with Meals on Wheels of Knox County. If you are a Meals on Wheels client, we ask that you contact them directly to request food delivery through the MOW program. 

When resources allow, we regularly provide local pet food pantries with pet food to help their community members.   

Saint’s Fund (Euthanasia Assistance) 

Deciding when to let your pet go is a difficult decision.  The Pope Memorial Humane Society doesn’t want financial hardship to be an issue when euthanasia is the most humane choice for a pet’s quality of life.

PMHS’s Saint’s Fund is available to pet owners residing in our service area who are facing financial hardship in affording the peaceful and humane euthanasia of their pet.  

We provide a Saint’s Fund voucher to pet owners on a case-by-case basis with veterinarian approval to provide financial help for these procedures. 

Once granted, a voucher will cover the cost for euthanasia and non-private cremation of the pet.  If the pet owner chooses private cremation, the pet owner is responsible for the additional expense.
