Art for the Animals
There has been a long tradition of local artists supporting the work of Pope Memorial Humane Society. The Art for the Animals auction secured funding to purchase the land we are on and supported operations as an annual event for over twenty years. Continuing that tradition, the Art Wall allows artists to display their work and show support for all that PMHS does for the community and its animals in need.
All work exhibited can be purchased, with a percentage of the selling price donated to support the work of Pope Memorial Humane Society. If you are interested in exhibiting your artwork and supporting the Shelter and would like further information, please email art@popehumane.org.

Pope Memorial Humane Society is thrilled to announce that the newest exhibition of artwork is now being displayed on the Art Wall in the lobby of the shelter. The current show, featuring pieces by Marjorie Strauss, is on display and available for purchase, with a portion of sales benefitting Pope Memorial Humane Society.

“I start with ordinary household shapes and cans of leftover paint. I check in with our senior beagle Charlie, my trusted creative consultant. I pick a brush, make a dot, a spiral, a squiggle, and go where the party takes me.
I got my start giving a second life to forlorn yard-sale chairs and tables and chests when I moved into a furnished house that turned out to have hardly a stick of furniture in it. I decorated everywhere, using handmade stencils and bands of color to break the gloom of bare walls and long fall afternoons.
From there I turned to making the kinds of pieces you see here — plaques, mirrors, ornaments — that carry that same sense of warmth, color and play into whatever rooms and houses they occupy. I work with easy, familiar materials — acrylics, hardboard, pine, polyurethane — and with a sort of doodler’s spirit that makes each piece fun.
I love making these things. I love the process itself, and I love that when I’m done with them, they get to live on in other homes and spaces. The whole idea is to share the happy.
I’m donating all proceeds from these sales to Pope Memorial Humane Society’s Molly Fund, a program dedicated to helping senior dogs find their forever families. Thank you, PMHS.“
Pope Memorial Humane Society is currently open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. We encourage our community to visit the shelter and see Marjorie’s artwork and the adoptable animals. If you are interested in exhibiting your work on the PMHS Art Wall, please email art@popehumane.org.
The mission of Pope Memorial Humane Society is to ensure the compassionate care, treatment, and placement of companion animals in transition and enrich the lives of pets and people in our community.
