Art for the Animals

There has been a long tradition of local artists supporting the work of Pope Memorial Humane Society. The Art for the Animals auction secured funding to purchase the land we are on and supported operations as an annual event for over twenty years. Continuing that tradition, the Art Wall allows artists to display their work and show support for all that PMHS does for the community and its animals in need.

All work exhibited can be purchased, with a percentage of the selling price donated to support the work of Pope Memorial Humane Society. If you are interested in exhibiting your artwork and supporting the Shelter and would like further information, please email art@popehumane.org.

Pope Memorial Humane Society is excited to welcome the newest artist to the PMHS Art Wall in the shelter’s lobby. “Sheltered Cats,” an exhibit of paintings by Jim Sollers and Marjorie Strauss, is on view at Pope Memorial Humane Society in Thomaston through October. The subjects are or have been residents of the shelter.

Jim Sollers is a longtime freelance illustrator, known to sailors and fishermen through his work in nautical books and magazines, including Cruising World and National Fishermen. His art has also been featured on the covers of novels and in five children’s books published by Down East. He lives in Thomaston. He painted these acrylics of cats especially for this exhibit.

Marjorie Strauss, painter and graphic designer, has lived in the midcoast for many years, drawn to Maine by its rugged beauty and the people’s sense of independence. She moved here after receiving a BFA in painting at Mass Art in Boston. Many of her works are in pastel, oil, acrylic, or clay, with subjects ranging from the ocean and landscapes to trees, flowers, and leaves. Also, she has always done portraits. First in school, then several summer stints doing portraits on the sidewalk on Cape Cod. Two of her models in this exhibit are Bustah and Missy (brother and sister), who were adopted after being fostered from the shelter.

The PMHS Art Wall highlights local artists, supports the shelter’s mission, and creates a welcoming space for visitors, adopters, and community members alike. Stop by to take a look, spend a little time with the art, and of course, meet the animals.

Pope Memorial Humane Society is open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm.
